The Sales Manager can be one of the most important people in the company. They are the driving force behind the companies sales team, having a bad sales manager can mean the death of a company. They will be responsible for the team performance and instruct them on how they should go about selling. It is important to keep the team motivated and to set an example. This position is not earned without proven sales experience and selling ability, but being a good salesperson doesn’t make you a good manager, hence strong leadership skills are needed. The sales manager would be responsible for his team hitting targets often hundreds of thousands or millions of pounds.
The sales manager’s salary would be considerably higher than the lower stages of sale staff ranging from 35k to 85k a year basic. There will also be opportunities for large amounts of commissions if your team hits targets.
Sales Managers can work long hours and find themselves getting attached to the job as it the company’s turnover can depend on how well they do. The job can be very trying when sales are lacking or your team is struggling. As well as having to lead the team the sales manager is also hands on with the selling as much as the salespeople he leads.
Tasks that the sales manager would be expected to carry out could be the recruitment process of new staff, in-house our agency, as well as any training needed. Monitoring the team and the sales they are achieving, this might involve motivational tactics such as; salesperson of the month. Keeping an eye on competing companies and their recent activities. They would be in charge of reporting to their seniors for example the directors or other departments. Target setting of individuals and of the team as a whole as well as predicting revenue and budget setting. Liaising with customers and long term clients or suppliers.
Sales managers can be involved with a large amount of the tasks within the company depending on how large the company. They may be invited to help with the development of the product or methods of making it appeal to different audiences. It is important for them to constantly be finding new business opportunities and methods of marketing the company. Sales managers could also be responsible for managing more than one office or store. Positions such as area sales manager or regional sales manager gives the person control and responsibility over a selection of the company’s offices. This would involve the manager doing more travelling and long hours as his person would be needed but a number of different people. The workload is larger than other salesperson roles but the rewards are also far greater.
