The main role will be selling manufactured products (made in the UK or US, or now often China. You will be selling internationally to distributors and agents who will then resell the products in their country. International selling can be tough and will mainly be done over the phone due to the distance between you and the client, you have to consider cultural differences and build strong relationships with people in different countries that you’ve never met. The ability to speak more than one language and the freedom to travel will be very beneficial. Salaries range quite a bit from £24K up to £60K Basic with the opportunity to earn considerable commissions from deals with large distributors.
For most export selling roles you will be joining a sales team and will need to have at least 2 years sales experience (telesales background is normally liked), but you have to have the skills to manage long term relationships as its not about the one of sale in this business. You also may need to organise logistics and will need a good understanding of international trade taxes and trade blocks.
