Sales Executive

A sales executive is a character who works within a company to maximise sales of the product or service that is your working with, who’s main task is to open new accounts and sometimes up sell to current clients. To be a sales executive you typically need at least 2 or 3 years experience of selling face to face and over the phone. Basic salaries are normally £18K - £28K but the potential to earn can be in the £80Ks in certain sectors, but make no mistake being a sales executive is no easy role.

The characteristics of a sales executive are of a confident, persuasive but not aggressive person who appears keen and enthusiastic. It can be difficult to keep up this kind of attitude when being turned down most of the time, but that defines how good a salesperson is. If they can keep up enthusiasm then your next lead could be just a phone call away.

The sales executive would be involved in two main types of selling; B2B (Business to Business) sales and B2C (Business to Customer) sales. Business to business could be for example selling soft drinks to shops. Business to customer could be for example selling a new type of credit card.

The sales executive’s roll can sometimes be extremely challenging as some products or services require an extensive amount of sales pitching before you can achieve a conversion. For this type of product the salesperson must be prepared to pitch to a number of companies before finding a lead. This requires determination and perseverance.

Some daily tasks a sales executive may come across could be; maintaining the relationship between the existing customers the company already have. Attend meetings with clients to discus business ventures and increase the probability of a conversion. The salesperson would also act as a communication link between the two companies or company to customer. Possibly the most important job would be to negotiate the price and agreements before closing the sale. They might represent the company at events such as trade exhibitions, business conferences or product demonstrations.

While on the job the salesperson also needs to consider their own performance to aim and meet targets often set by the company but could also be personal goals. The salesperson could attend team meetings and share with their colleague’s experiences and particular sales where they might have done well, or even particular phrases that seems to entice the buyer.
